Blackpool Lancashire: Englands Favorite Seaside Resort

The town of Blackpool, Lancashire, England, has been a centre of English tourism since railway lines opened the seaside resort in the 1800s. Nestled against the Irish Sea, it has a population of about 144,000, making it the fourth-largest city in North West England, after Liverpool, Manchester and Warrington. Blackpool is a 40 minute drive northwest of Manchester.

The Great British Holiday – Blackpool Illuminations Through The Years
It was before the First World War that Blackpool had itâs first Illuminations on an organised scale. However, in 1925, âThe Lightsâ went on in earnest, extending the summer season by several weeks and providing a fine excuse for another nostalgic peep at Blackpool before the winter. The Autumn Illuminations were revived on a scale much grander than pre-war. Crowds flocked in to see this fairyland spectacle which extended the season well on into October and eclipsed the attractions of all other British seaside resorts.
